Shaw University Inducted into the African American Civil Rights Network

Shaw University is honored to announce its induction into the African American Civil Rights Network (AACRN), a national initiative that recognizes institutions for their significant contributions to the Civil Rights Movement.

This recognition underscores Shaw University’s longstanding legacy as a leader in advancing justice and equality.

Founded in 1865 as the first historically Black university in the South, Shaw University has played a critical role in shaping civil rights history. The institution is notably known as the birthplace of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), established in 1960 under the leadership of alumna Ella Baker. Shaw University became a hub for student activism, sparking a movement that led to monumental social change.
