Dave Walters Jr.: Filmmaker, Futurist, and Face of the Next Generation of Media

Shaw University is proud to celebrate the accomplishments of Dave Walters Jr., a 2024 graduate who is quickly making a name for himself in filmmaking, journalism, and digital media. Walters is a filmmaker, producer, journalist, host, and influencer whose work has earned national recognition, including four Telly Awards highlighting his talent, vision, and growing impact in the industry.

Among his award-winning projects, “Beyond the Barbershop” stands out as a powerful example of storytelling rooted in community. The documentary follows Alsalm “Jomo” Hines, a Raleigh-based barber who offers free and discounted haircuts to Shaw University students and local youth. The film is more than a profile; it is a moving tribute to mentorship, accessibility, and community impact.

“Beyond the Barbershop” earned three Telly Awards in 2024, including a Gold Telly for Best Student Production. The project highlighted the collaborative talent within Shaw’s Department of Mass Communications. Titus Burrell, department chair, served as producer, and Nakya Carter, a fellow Class of 2024 graduate, co-directed the film with Walters. Together, the team brought a local story to life with meaning and national relevance.
